Our monthly seasonal focus from the ParaBoss extension team

Keeping sheep, goats and cattle healthy relies on minimising the amount of worm larvae they pick up from the grass.

At this time of year, it is a good idea to look at the mechanisms in place to reduce pasture larval contamination (PLC) to ensure that the most susceptible animals are given priority pick.

Sheep Lice Control for Ewes and Lambs

Different administration methods vary in their time to kill lice, making timing and planning essential.

Selecting the correct product and ensuring its effectiveness before lambing season begins is key.

Effective treatment AT THE RIGHT TIME before lambs are born ensures lice are eradicated, preventing transmission to newborns.

Keeping Coccidiosis at bay - in sheep, cattle and goats

It’s winter, and now is when we see Coccidiosis in our flocks and herds. Coccidiosis can cause significant losses in your herds and flocks.

You hear a lot of talk about ‘Coxie’ causing disease in livestock, but what is it?

This parasite more formally called ‘coccidiosis’, affects young sheep, cattle and goats, plus a range of other animal species, including pigs and chooks. As well as death and sickness, Coxie can slow growth rates in young stock. Sometimes undiagnosed stock losses may be due to Coxie.

Although seen most often over the winter months, Coxie is present in normal flocks and herds all year round, and when conditions are right, Coccidia will proliferate and cause disease.

Join the ParaBoss team as we explore this parasite, which conditions give rise to its proliferation and disease, what the signs and symptoms of disease are and its impacts on sheep, cattle and goats. We will also discuss what steps you can take to minimise its impact in your stock.

As always, we encourage you to send in any questions to extension@paraboss.com.au or ask them real-time in the webinar!

Fast fact

Resistance is getting worse in worms of all grazing animals. This recent work from New Zealand found that cattle had two different types of worms that were resistant to multiple drenches at the same time, on four farms that relied heavily on drenching to control their worm problem.

If it can happen in New Zealand, it can happen here. Avoid relying only on drenches – and ‘test don’t guess’ to be sure that the drench you’re using is the most effective against the worms on your property.
