Oakwood Workshop June 2019
New Breeders’ Workshop,
Oakwood Boer Goats, Boho Vic,
1 June 2019
Jeff Washusen and Claire Edwards of Oakwood Boer Goats hosted a New Breeders’ Workshop at Boho, Victoria on Saturday 1st June 2019. New and current breeders travelled for the day from Wagga Wagga, Tarcutta, Culcairn and north of Newcastle in NSW and from NE Victoria and the Philippines. BGBAA Chairperson Dean Smith and BGBAA Vic Committee Member Nerida Tull were also present.
It was a very fine, sunny but cool day showcasing the best Winter weather that North East Victoria can provide after a week of cold, blustery and wet weather. The morning presentation was held in the multi-purpose Community Room at the local Boho CFA Fire Shed.
South African Judge Josef Kleynhans, of Dhidejak stud, assisted by his wife Amor, gave a presentation based on the South African Junior (Judges) Course. This involved a presentation of the South African Breed Standard and detailed discussion of the economic value of the Boer Goat and many aspects of goat breeding, handling and management practices. There were plenty of questions and discussion from participants.
The afternoon session was conducted at The Oakwood Goat Hotel (our covered yards) and involved detailed discussion on evaluation both Does and Bucks as well as practical demonstrations of hoof trimming, show preparation and Oakwood’s goat handling equipment.
Participants were involved in practical assessment of does and bucks and application of the breed standard for classing of goats into Stud or Commercial quality by SA Breed Standard. There were questions and discussion.
Participants received a copy of the booklet “A Study of the SA Boer Goat” and will each receive a Certificate from SABGBA in recognition of their attendance.
Thanks to Josef and Amor Kleynhans, both for sharing their knowledge and experience and for being enjoyable and entertaining house guests at Oakwood for four days.
